United Way is an international organization that has its roots in Canada back to 1939. Currently, there more than 100 independent United Ways, with 12 in BC. Each United Way operates locally, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of members of the community they serve.

The needs of our community continue to exceed the resources available. As funding for local agencies and programs cease during challenging financial times, the number of requests for support continues to increase. Without United Way’s assistance, some vital organizations would simply not survive.

We do everything in our power to ensure that of every dollar we raise, as much as possible goes to the community. Last year, our fundraising costs were 15% — By comparison, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) considers under 35% to be an acceptable costs to revenue ratio. Investing donor dollars wisely is just one measure of accountability.

Note that fundraising costs don’t vary directly with the size of the campaign, so the campaign could double without a material change in fundraising costs. So, more dollars means a lower fundraising cost ratio and more money doing good.

Our commitment to our community is that we will always go one step further to promote transparency and accountability — and to ensure the support of our generous donors goes to those who need it most.

  • Responsible fundraising and financial practices
At United Way, we make every effort to be open in our financial practices. In addition to following the standards set by the Canada Revenue Agency, United Way Canada developed its own Transparency, Accountability and Financial Reporting policies, which are intended to ensure the highest degree of transparency and accountability when reporting financial information by member United Way organizations.
  • Audited financial statements and reports
Each year an independent accounting firm conducts a full audit of United Way’s finances. Our 2016 Financial statements, as audited by Manning Elliott Chartered Accountants, are available here.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires registered charities to file yearly reports with detailed information about finances and activities. For United Way’s filings going back to 2000, visit the CRA website.

Yes, you can designate some, or all, of your gift to any of the 85,000 registered charities in Canada. United Way charges a one-time fee of $12 per designation for administration costs.

With the help of hundreds of volunteers, United Way’s cost of fundraising is low. It is likely more of your gift will go where it is needed than if you gave directly.
Also, United Way provides you with the opportunity to give by payroll deduction, which makes it affordable and easy to give.
